MSG (monosodium glutamate), one of the most commonly used food additive, has been linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome and progressive liver disease.

According to Russell Blaylock, MD, the world’s leading authority on the dangers of MSG, ”early exposure in life to high doses of glutamate, or the other excitotoxins, could theoretically produce a whole array of disorders much later in life, such as obesity, impaired growth, endocrine problems, sleep difficulties, emotional problems including episodic anger, and sexual psycho-pathology.”

MSG safety questioned by medical doctors

Dr. Blaylock couldn’t be more clear when he said, “Aspartame is not a necessary nutrient, and neither is MSG. The weight of the evidence is overwhelming. If you want to avoid obesity, metabolic syndrome, neurodegenerative diseases and cancer, and if you don’t want to make your cancer more aggressive, then you need to stay away from these products.”

George R. Schwartz, MD wrote a book In Bad Taste: The MSG Symptom Complex in which he said, “the obesity effect of MSG in animals requires evaluation since unexplained obesity is increasing in our population, along with hypertension and diabetes. MSG-induced obesity in animals may carry long-term significance for humans.”

And, finally, In the late 1960s, neuroscientist Dr. John Olney discovered that feeding newborn rats MSG caused them to become grossly obese. In fact, every time the experiment was repeated the results were the same, no matter which animal species was used, it didn’t have to be either a mice or rat for this to occur.

Humans are extremely sensitive to MSG

In truth, humans are known to be at least five times more susceptible to MSG toxicity than lab animals and babies are four times more sensitive than adults.

An edition of Obesity examined in detail the association between MSG intake and weight gain in humans – it’s been shown that injections of MSG in mice lead to significant inflammation, obesity, and type-2 diabetes.

Studies published in PubMed reveal the influence MSG has on health. PubMed is comprised of biomedical literature from Medline, life science journals and online publications.

Many scientists, published in PubMed, concluded that the government should reevaluate the safety of MSG based on scientific studies. This is what they said:

“We submit that MSG treatment of mice induces obesity and diabetes with steatosis and steatohepatitis resembling human NAFLD and NASH with pre-neoplastic lesions.”

Understand what you just read – ‘NASH’ and ‘NAFLD’ are terms for non-alcoholic liver disease. Steatophepatitis is known as fatty liver disease characterized by inflammation of the liver.

In PubMed, the science suggests ‘these results take on considerable significance in light of the widespread usage of dietary MSG and we suggest that MSG should have its safety profile re-examined and be potentially withdrawn from the food chain.’

NAFLD is rapidly becoming the most common liver disease worldwide, particularly so in the Western world with an estimated prevalence of 20 – 30% of the population being affected.

Of course, MSG is considered a ‘safe’ food additive by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Yet, the public has never been provided with what a safe dosage is and the interaction it has with other additives and drugs. It’s no wonder why many people refer to the FDA as the ‘food and death administration’.

Lethal amounts of MSG are in our food supply

Scientific studies have shown that food laced with the MSG cause people to eat more, and faster, than food without it. Major food producers love this fact – because it helps them to sell more products and make more money. Over time, larger quantities of MSG have been used – as people develop a tolerance for flavor enhanced foods.

Since the FDA sets no limit on how much MSG can be added to foods – it’s virtually impossible to ingest a small amount of this substance when dining out or buying conventionally produced, processed foods.

Buyer beware and read food labels carefully

Even buying packaged foods off the shelves of health food stores provide no guarantee that you’ll be MSG-free. Just remember, it is extremely difficult to find any canned or packaged food without MSG added.

Food producers like to hide MSG – by calling it another name – especially in most canned soups, dried soup mixes, frozen prepared meals, canned beans, salad dressing, gravy, chili, seasoning blends, bouillon, broth, pizza, desserts, and even whey protein isolate. Your best bet is to avoid these foods.

These are just some of the names used as MSG disguises: autolyzed yeast extract, textured or hydrolyzed protein, hydrolyzed corn, modified starches, natural flavors, disodium inosinate or disodium guanylate, glutamate, yeast extract, hydrolyzed protein, carrageenan, citric acid, maltodextrin, soy protein concentrate, and soy sauce extract.

Avoiding MSG is a lifestyle choice

MSG can also be added to nearly everything in the food chain. The rule of thumb is to avoid processed foods including those in health food stores and restaurants.

Stay away from deli meats, fast food restaurants, and just about anything in plastic wrap.

Make your own meals and buy ingredients in their natural state. Use basic condiments and herbs to add a delicious (safe) flavor to your foods.

And, of course, the nicest way to enjoy a healthy diet is to eat lots of local, organically produced vegetables, fruits and (if you like) animal foods – in small quantities.
