How does light increase the risk of getting cancer?

Just to be clear, natural light from the sun – during the daytime – is actually a good thing. This is NOT the kind of light we’re talking about today. But, rather, it’s the artificial light from electronic devices and light bulbs that causes a serious health problem – especially at night.

You see, the pineal gland is responsible for producing melatonin – which is way more than a ‘sleep promoting’ hormone. But, simply put, melatonin is regulated by light and darkness. In other words, light inhibits its production and darkness stimulates it.

So, how does artificial light threaten human life? Well, we know that melatonin is an anticancer substance and artificial light (especially used at night) suppresses melatonin production. Therefore, according to Russel J. Reiter, Ph.D., “light is killing you.”

For example, Dr. Reiter goes on to explain that, “female breast cancer is 5 times more common in the industrialized countries than it is in the non-industrialized countries. 50 percent of these cancer are not explainable by the conventional risk factors. Western countries are undoubtedly becoming 24 hour a day societies. In other words, we are eliminating from our environment darkness.”

Can melatonin help to prevent neurodegenerative diseases?

The quick answer is yes! Scientific research clearly illustrates that melatonin plays a crucial role in regulating circadian rhythms (our biological clock); the quality of our sleep; mood, reproduction, tumor growth and aging. In fact, it actually can affect the activity of several receptors inside cancer cells.
